1. Tamil Nadu State Open School (TNSOS)

• Official Role: Operated by the Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE), Tamil Nadu. It is the official state government stream for private candidates to clear Class 10 and Class 12.

• Who is it for? School dropouts, working adults, and private candidates who want a certificate equivalent to the regular state board.

Courses Offered

A. Secondary Course (Class 10 / SSLC Equivalent)

• Eligibility: Age 14+. No formal education required (self-certificate allowed) OR failed 8th/9th standard.

• Description: Students must study 5 subjects. The certificate is valid for admission to Higher Secondary (11th/12th) and government jobs.

• Subjects:

  1. Language I: Tamil (or Urdu, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada).

  2. Language II: English.

  3. Mathematics.

  4. Science.

  5. Social Science.

B. Senior Secondary Course (Class 12 / HSC Equivalent)

• Eligibility: Passed Class 10 (SSLC) from a recognized board.

• Description: Equivalent to the regular +2 State Board. Valid for University admission (Engineering, Arts, Science, etc.).

• Subject Groups (Streams):

  • Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Computer Science, Mathematics.

  • Commerce: Commerce, Accountancy, Economics, History/Computer Applications.

  • Humanities: History, Geography, Political Science, Economics.

2. Tamil Nadu Council for Open and Distance Learning (TCODL)

• Status: This is an autonomous non-governmental council.

• Caution: While they offer "Open Schooling" (10th & 12th) and various diploma courses, you must verify if their certificate is accepted for your specific purpose (e.g., a specific government job or a specific university).

• Courses:

  • Open School: 8th, 10th, and 12th standard.

  • Technical Diplomas: Automobile, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.

  • Vocational Certificates: Early Childhood Care, Fire & Safety, Land Survey, etc.
